Book Review: Behave by Robert Sapolsky

This was another fascinating read! My colleague Russ, always brings up this book in our discussions, and it was 700+ pages of insightful, thought-provoking information.

The full title: Behave - The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Our Worst, provides insight into the book's contents, and there was a lot of research and detail about genetics and origins.

The book is set out in a cool way to visualise how human biology and behaviour across time impact behaviour today. It offers an insightful and engaging look into the complexities of human behaviour.

One of the most fascinating things about the book is its focus on behaviour from a biological perspective. Sapolsky explains how our brains work and how they influence our actions. He shows us that the human brain is not a static organ but is continually shaped by our experiences and environment. Understanding this fundamental concept is crucial in developing effective behavioural interventions, so Sapolsky's work is essential for behaviour analysts.

Behaviour analysts have historically focused on antecedents and consequences of behaviour, but Sapolsky's work offers a more nuanced approach. His book demonstrates that behavioural change is a complex process that involves biological, social, and environmental factors. Behavioural change requires a comprehensive understanding of the individual's biology, history, and context. Hence, Contextual Behaviour Analysis!

Behave is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in understanding human behaviour. From a behavioural analytic perspective, the book offers a rich and comprehensive look into the complexities of human behaviour, emphasizing the role of biology, environment, and context. Moreover, it gives us a positive outlook on behavioural change and reminds us that our work is essential.
